Once a province of Gondor, the land was given to the men of Eotheod, Cirion of Gondor in T. A. 2510, in return for their aid in the battle of Celebrant and their swearing to the oath of Eorl. Rohan was ruled by King Eorl and his descendants. The Rohirrim farmed and also raised horses, and restored ancient fortresses and refuges. The most important of which were Dunharrow and Helms Deep. The first Kings built the capital, Edoras, which contained the great feast-hall, Meduseld. Their greatest concern was for their horses, which were the best in the world. The Rohirrim called their land 'The Riddermark', the Mark of the Riders, or The Mark.
