The following is a list of those who died as a result of the explosion.
Of the above men 23 were married and 19 were single. 59 children i.e. under 13 years of age were left fatherless. The oldest man was William Day who was 71 years of age and the youngest was Joseph Scattergood who was only 13 years of age. The average age was 37. 11 men lived at Baxterley (7 from Baxterley Hall Cottages) 7 men lived at Baddesley Ensor 7 men lived at Grendon 3 men lived at Merevale 2 men lived at Atherstone 1 man lived at Dordon 1 man lived at Ansley LIST OF ALL THE MEN INVOLVED IN THE BADDESLEY PIT EXPLOSION After the inquests into the deaths had taken place the Relief Fund Committee decided that all the rescuers involved in the explosion deserved recognition for their brave efforts on the 1st and 2nd of May 1882. They therefore asked Reuben Smallman, the mining engineer who had taken charge of the rescue operations to provide a list of all the men involved. The men, both those who survived and the representatives of those who died, were later presented with a special commemorative Bible, suitably inscribed in the flyleaf. Fortunately this list has survived and was amongst the Relief Fund documents purchased by Nuneaton and North Warwickshire Family History Society in 1999. The original documents are now on permanent loan at Warwick County Record Office but copies are held at Atherstone library and by myself on behalf of NNWFHS. The list is transcribed in full below with kind permission of NNWFHS. Baddesley Colliery No 1 List Fire and explosion - 1st and 2nd May 1882
