Playa D'Aro 2005 - Report:
" Steven Laverty and Ian Barrie enjoyed the training at the recent Nanbudo Seminar held in Playa D’Aro, Spain on 25/7 to 29/7 with Doshu Nanbu.
Approximately 100 students participated from all over the World, including Norway, France, Slovenia, Croatia, Germany, Finland, Poland, Morocco & the U.K.
There were two training sessions each day, 3 hours in the morning and 2.5 hours in the evening.
Doshu spent a lot of time each session developing Ki Energy through a series of 6 exercises which involved hand movements passing/scanning over the body whilst focusing mentally on your internal energy passing through the meridians in the body. Your imagination was used to take energy from the earth to the sky and back down again through your body, transferring energy to the mind and body in this movement. These exercises were very invigorating and stimulating in the glorious setting of the sea, beach and sun of Playa D’Aro.
Doshu continued this Ki Energy theme with the practice of the Gen Ki Katas: Shodan, Nedan, Sandan, Yondan, Goban & Nanaban – these have intricate stance, hand and breathing movements and we were split up into groups taken by the Shihans to practice which helped a lot.
Randori has developed further with the introduction of Umanori Randori Ichi No Kata (mounting a horse)in which the defence is to Ashi Barai the attacker, step over them on the ground and then sit on them and then double hand strike to the throat. This was developed further into Musha Sumou Randori in which the attackers hand is grasped and held then Ashi Barai then step over, sit on them, grasp the other hand as well, then throttle their throat using their own arms which you have grasped and then simulate cutting their throat. The Doshu asked us to keep the Kia to a low volume in these Randoris, just in case other people on the beach thought we were terrorists.
Ki Nanbu Taiso and Ki Nanbu Taiso Sho were also worked on a great deal, again splitting into groups with the Shihans – lots of detail points were emphasised and practised.
Katas Nanbu Shodan, Nedan, Sandan, Yondan, & Gondan were practised and also advanced Katas Seipai and Seienchin. As always, slight modifications in them all.
Shi Ho Tai Tsuki has also developed – we now do Gedan Barai, O’Tsuki, Sereto. Jodan Uke.
On the Thursday morning session, we attended theory presentations given by Aleksander Kelsin – Slovenia and Dr Carlos - Spain. Aleksander clarified stance positions in Chokusen combinations 1 – 6 and Chokusen Randori – defender goes onto the right leg on the turn. Dr Carlos gave a talk on Ki Energy, including links to the Gen Ki Katas. All of which was very interesting.
On the Thursday night session, we formed a big circle and practised meditation in Nanbudo Nantsu No Chikara – the Seven Forces of Nanbudo. Each country repeating the forces in their own language. This was very powerful and helped formed great bonds between the students from all the countries.
There were also many bars nd cafe's I think everyone of them had a contingent of Nanbudoka, which was great as you could stop for a chat when you walked down the main street in the evenings. There was a party on the Wednesday night which everybody attended and were very friendly despite the various backgrounds, countries and language – no barriers whatsoever – great.
The above is just a brief summary of the Training, of course there was a lot more, it was bit like trying to drink from a hose which was on full power, a bit difficult, but good to be part of, nonetheless.
Special thanks to Doshu for the training of course, and also Yan, Eva & Aleksander and other members of the WNA Executive Committee for organising.
Ouss, Ian Barrie."
