In the heart of Europe, from Nice to Vienna, in Austria, the folding of the Alps develops longitudinally in a series of parallel chains from which the prealpine relief constitutes the external slope of the alpine line.
The development of the prealpine mountain formations coincides with a noticeable lower level of altitudes and also by more compact and regular forms of the ground.
Less imposing than the Alps, the relief does not lack however of steep, rugged, imposing mountains.
Picturesque sites with the frequent contrasts accentuated by the diversity of sights : soft wild or cultivated grassy undulations, dwellings holding to mountain sides, steep mountains where the strong green of the forest is only broken off by long rocky ledges.
From the Mediterranean to the Adriatic, a link between the two cycling excursions, conceived primarily using medium mountain roads was essential to carry out the complete crossing of the prealpine curve:
La randonnée préalpine - the first part, from Antibes to Thonon-les-Bains, with a distance of 894 km (555 miles), 48 passes, includes the French part of the pre alps from the Mediterranean sea regions to the high valleys of the Rhone (lake of Geneva);
the second part, from Thonon-les Bains to Venezia, with a distance of 1209 km (751 miles), 69 passes, takes place through parts of the Swiss and Italian Prealps, from lake of Geneva to the Adriatic.
Going through this intermediate area, the raid offers a great diversity of tourist attractions and levels of strength from the easy rides in the low valleys to the tough rides on the steep mountain paths with so many breathtaking views and places: Devoluy, Diois, Vercors, Chartreuses, Aravis, Orta, Maggiore, Lugano, Como, Lecco, just to quote a few.
